The town of Okotoks is a small community 18 kilometers south of Calgary in the province of Alberta. The town is situated on the Sheep River near a river crossing used by First Nations and early European traders.

The name Okotoks is derived from the Blackfoot word "ohkotok", meaning "big rock", describing the immense glacial erratics found just west of the current town site
